    Question Create scatter point graph

I have a spreadsheet with categories in column A, and one data value in column B (a user score), and a different data value in column C (a manager score). I want to plot a graph with user score on one axis and manager score on the other axis, and then a dot (showing the category name, if possible) plotted on the graph. I've tried an X Y Scatter, but Excel forces the X-axis to a counter (1 through 38) and then plots the different scores under two different color dots. When I select to change data, the Horizontal Axis Edit button is grayed out. Any suggestions?

(Note, I've added a photo to show how the data is laid out and what I'm getting. Ideally I'd just have one dot per row, and it would be the intersection of the User Score on one axis and the Manager Score on the other.)

    Re: Create scatter point graph

it looks like your graph is reading the data as two separate series, not the x and y values of a single series.
check to make sure you have one set of data as the x values and the other as the y values of a single series
if that doesn't work, perhaps upload a copy of the spreadsheet so we can take a look

It looks like you are including column A in the source data, so it is using column A as the x data. Column A is a series of text values, so it defaults to count numbers (1,2,3...) for the x data. Either recreate the chart using columns b and c (not including a) as the source data, or go into the select source data that you show in the picture, delete one data series, and select the desired x and y data for the other series.

    Re: Create scatter point graph

Thanks for the input, MrShorty. I changed the source data to be just columns B and C, and that does graph the points I want, but ideally I could then label each point with the category it represents (which doesn't seem possible since now column A is not associated with the data). Am I just trying to do something that's not supported?

(NickyC--you got the problem right, and it sounds like the solution right, the issue is I don't know how to do what you're suggesting. Thank you though.)

That kind of functionality is not easily accomplished with native, built-in Excel tools. It is easily added to Excel using Rob Bovey's free XY chart labeler add-in: http://appspro.com/Utilities/Utilities.htm

If for some reason you are not allowed to download and install the add-in, search this forum. I know there have been at least one case where someone proposed VBA code to do the same as this add-in.

    Hi
if you select the chart and run this macro, it will promt you to enter the range with the labels, then add them to the chart
