Refreshing Pivot Table fails to reorder the rows

I have a workbook containing many pivot tables. When I create a pivot table everything works fine. When I close the workbook, reopen it, and refresh the pivot table, the new data will appear at the bottom of the table instead of being inserted in the proper row in the table. Since the table is no longer in sequential order my VLOOKUP functions don't work properly. What do I need to do to get the already established pivot table to refresh properly?

    Thanks!

Re: Refreshing Pivot Table fails to reorder the rows

When I create the table, Excel presents me with a list of fields. I pick the field I want to sort and drag it to the "Row Labels" area. The table is then sorted correctly. When I add rows to the original table and refresh the pivot table, the new entries appear at the bottom of the pivot table list. So I'm not sure I know what your question. If I look at the PivotTable options I see a check box under "Field List Sort A to Z Sort in data source order" The radio button is clicked on "Sort in data source order". Should that be on "Sort A to Z"?. Is that what you are asking?

Thanks so much for the help!

yeah-if you want the data sorted a-z. then new data will be included in the sort

Re: Refreshing Pivot Table fails to reorder the rows

So I checked the box "Sort A to Z" on the PivotTables options and refreshed. The new data from the table appeared at the bottom of the Pivot Table again. The box that I checked sorted the field names (the names of each column in row 1) which, of course, had nothing to do with the results of the PivotTable.

So, when I click a cell in the PivotTable, right click and select "Refresh" the new data from the source table gets added to the PivotTable at the bottom. What do I do to get the new data to insert in the correct order in the PivotTable?

    Thanks again for you help.

you need to sort the field in the pivot table not the field list. right-click the row field and choose sort
