Question Excel 2010 - Return date (MMM) from "multiple cells" otherwise blank

I have a spreadsheet with categories and dates where one category will get one (1) DATE (MM/DD/YYYY). I need to be able to get a return MONTH (MMM) from date entered AFTER it checks MULTIPLE fields for each category.

    A B C D
    Cat 1 Cat 2 Cat 3 Cat 4 MONTH
2 1/1/2014 JAN (must check A2 thru D2 and return MMM, if no value then BLANK)
3 2/1/2014 FEB (must check A3 thru D3 and return MMM, if no value then BLANK)
4 3/1/2014 MAR (must check A4 thru D4 and return MMM, if no value then BLANK)
5 4/1/2014 APR (must check A5 thru D5 and return MMM, if no value then BLANK)

    Your help will be appreciated,
    AA

So what happen if there's value in either of the column (A to D)?

If there is a value (date) in one of those fields, display the month (MMM) in cell A and will also need the year (YYYY) from the same date.
    Cell A1 = 4/21/2014
    Cell B1 = blank
    Cell C1 = blank
    So on...

On cell where formula is it should display "Apr"
I would use same formula to also capture the year "2014".

    Thank you. I appreciate it.

Please upload a sample workbook with enough sample data in it along with the expected output (filled manually) and explaining in the sheet itself that how do you expect that output. This will help us to know your sheet layout so that the provided formula will be best suited to your original workbook as well.

    Hello sktneer,
This is very close and would work perfectly if I could use a range as you have it A2:D2; however the cells I am looking will not be in a range as you have it. I uploaded an example of what I am looking for. I appreciate your help and time on this... AA
