Formula to read code in Column D, then apply color to columns a, b, c?

On a sheet with 575 lines, I need to enter a formula, probably in column E, which will look at the code in Column D, then format the color of columns A, B, C. The code could be any one of 7 codes, 1a, 1b, 2a, 2b, 3a, 3b, N/A. The goal is to have all lines that have 1a in column D be one color (pink), all lines with 1b in column D be one color (green), and so on.

I do not have enough experience with IF or LOOKUP to figure this one out on my own, and would appreciate being pushed in the right direction for any on-line reading materials relating to this type of formula.

    Thank you.

You can't change the colour of a column with a formula, per se. What you need to look at is Conditional Formatting. Assuming that your data starts in row 2, select A2 down to the end of column C.

Then select Conditional Formatting, New, Formula and use the formula:

and format with the colour of your choice.

I'll get a chance to try this tomorrow. Thank you for the quick response.
