Problem using MATCH function

i'm having a problem with this formula:

=INDEX(A:A,MATCH(MIN(B:B),B:B))

when I replace the MIN(B:B) with the cell of the lowest value (for instance, B12), it has no problems working. but i am trying the automate the process a little more so i dont have to pick out every cell individually as i copy this formula across many columns. it also doesn't work if i replace the cell with its actual value, like "2". i guess i don't understand why this is happening?
