Looking for help with a formula as unsure how to do it

Hi,

I'm working on a database at work and I want to create a formula (or function)
That goes something like this

I want a cell containing any data to pick up a number
Value in a different cell and sum it in another cell (if that makes sense!)

I'm sure it can be done but I just don't know how so any help would be appreciated!

Your title is still pretty vague (think google?), and also, your description is not that clear either?
Sounds almost as if you are looking at using the SUMIF() function.

I would try to advise you on a better title, but Im not really sure what you want either

To best describe or illustrate your problem you would be better off attaching a dummy workbook. The workbook should contain the same structure and some dummy data of the same type as the type you have in your real workbook - so, if a cell contains numbers & letters in this format abc-123 then that should be reflected in the dummy workbook.

To attach a file to your post,
click advanced (next to quick post),
scroll down until you see "manage file",
click that and select "add files" (top right corner).
click "select files" find your file, click "open" click "upload" click 'done" bottom right. click "submit reply"

Once the upload is completed the file name will appear below the input boxes in this window.
You can then close the window to return to the new post screen.

Thank you, yes I seem to be struggling with the words to describe what I want to do! I will attach a dummy file, currently viewing this on my phone as I don't have a computer at home so I will up load tomorrow, thank you for your advice
