Counting words given two criterias.

Hi,

I want to count words given two criteria.
So I basically want to combine the COUNTA function and the COUNTIFS function. Is this somehow possible?
I have attached a sample spreadsheet in the post.

Test Excel.xlsx
I hope anyone knows how to count letters with more criteria

How do you arrive at the values you have in D and E?
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
2. If your question is resolved, mark it SOLVED using the thread tools

I count in my head :S That is the problem.
But the idea is to count all the time where Jon stands in the B cell, given Sofie stand in the C cell at the same row.
And if I want to count the numbers for row 15, then I only want to count rows from 5 to 14. Not including the last one.

lol :D Sadly not what I was looking for.
Forget the worksheet if it is confusin. All I want to know is... Is there a way to count words, given more than just one criteria?
COUNTIFS will allow more criteria, but is can only count numbers.

Hmm maybe this will clear it up.
The row 15, has Jon - Sofie and the count for Jon is 2.
This means, that Jon has appeared two times above, given Sofie is in cell next to Jon.

Does it make any sense at all?

I don't know what you mean by this, COUNTIFS can count anything.

Try this in F15:
Formula: copy to clipboard

Agree with Jacc, countifS() is not restricted to just numbers, it can count (numbers OR test), based on numeric AND text criteria

Hmm, i guess that is correct.
However, when you use that function the results says "1" .. How can it be 1 when the criteria are met 3-4 times?

Maybe because you spelled Sofie incorrectly in C14 in your original workbook?

Do you wish to count
only "Jon - Sofie"
or
both "Jon - Sofie" and "Sofie - jon"?

Re: Counting words given two criterias.

And yes, you are right I misspelled. Now it counts "Jon - Sofie" right.
I am only looking for the count of "Jon" given "Jon - Sofie" but I guess that that is the same number as just counting "Jon- Sofie" .. I think the COUNTIFS will do the job for me.

Thank you for the help.
