dependent validation and multiple choice lists

    Dear Forum members,

I urgently need assistance with building a excel record inventory template that uses dependent drop downs and multiple choice lists on the same template worksheet.

I can be considered a novice Excel user when it comes to this functionality.

I am attaching the Excel workbook with description on each sheet of what is expected, as trying to describe my need here would be a lot of complicated text.

I would greatly appreciate your help and guidance on this.

Dear Keashan, thank you for your recommendation. However, my request is a little more involved than just creating drop down lists in a one on one relationship. I would appreciate any additional assistance which you could provide though.

Hi welkom aan die voorum SA ex-pat here from PE and Klerksdorp. How goes it in P-town?

I think the attached will give you a good idea on how to do what you want. The basis is that for every different or sub drop-down, it needs to have its own range and range name. The range are best named with what the "previous" drop-down result will show. The sub-drop-downs use INDIRECT() as their "refers to"

I have created 1 2-tier dependant drop-down, but the principal is the same for the next set/s. The more you have though, the more complex it becomes

Re: dependent validation and multiple choice lists

    Hallo Ford,

All is well in the land of e-tolls and potholes. We are no longer in the land of milk an honey, as we are in recession and [apparently] depression

Thank you for the assistance. Creating the dynamic drop downs is the easy part. I am more concerned about dealing with the following:

    a) in a single list, I have one word and multiple word items, e.g. Finance, Human Resources, Regulatory Risk Reporting. When creating the drop downs, it works perfectly with the single word items, but not with the multiple word items. Where multiple word items should have a dependent drop down in the next cell, the drop downs are non-responsive. Clicking on the drop down arrows does nothing.

    b) Some of the columns should allow for multiple choice lists. For example an item can belong to more than one Business Unit in a Franchise. The client does not want the same item captured on multiple rows to indicate that they belong to more than one BU. The BU cell should contain the names of all the BU's the item belongs too. How do I go about creating multiple choice list that exist in a relationship to a series of dependent validation lists?

    Regards,

    Louisa

Re: dependent validation and multiple choice lists

    Dear Forum Members,

I successfully added a third dependent drop down.

I then tried the fourth dependent drop down, but it does not work. I assume it has something to do with naming the range properly so that it links to the specific choice in the third drop down? I tried different variations of AA1, but did not manage to get it working properly. What am I missing?

    I would appreciate your assistance.

    Regards,

    Louisa
