    Counting initials

I have a worksheet that I am laying out that will track the following 3 items. Who work is scheduled for, the work number, and who completed the work. the columns are Worker, Scheduled, Complete and they repeat 3 more times across the top of the page so as to be able to fit onto one sheet. So the following: Worker, Scheduled, Complete, Worker, Scheduled, Complete, ... for A, B, C,..., L. What I will be doing to track all of the workers using initials and then also using initials in the complete column. On another page in the sheet I have a list of all of the initials down one column, scheduled, complete, compl.%. As for the compl.% that is the easy part. I need to be able to count the number of times initials for specific initials to be counted as they are typed in the Worker columns and also the same formula would be used to count the occcurences of initials under the Complete column. COUNTA will not work as I am looking for specific initials under specific columns. Please help.

I'm not visiualizing your data set real well but will a COUNTIFS work?....it allows multiple criteria to be counted....HTH

    Re: Counting initials

I am attempting to count the occurences of specific initials in the following ranges: A3:A34, D3:D34, G3:G34, J3:J34. COUNTIFS, will allow me to select multiple ranges and multiple criteria and I used the following formula: =COUNTIFS(A3:A34, "*DW*",D3:D34,"*DW*", G3:G34,"*DW*", J3:J34,"*DW*"). DW being the initials I was searching for. I used "*DW*" as the criteria for all and then changed it to criteria_1 only. My final result no matter what I tried was always 0 for COUNTIFS. COUNTIF did work, but only allowed one range at a time, leading to multiple final columns to count all for A,D,G, & J columns. Any help is appreciated.

it's kind of clunky but this might work?

you can add more columns and change the DW by referencing a Cell....
