Cannot Find Link to External Workbook

    Hey All,
I have a document (unfortunately I cannot attach it) in Excel 365 that each time I open it I get the usual prompt that it is calling an external link. As much as i'd love to hide the popup I need to find the link to solve to problem but I'm at a loss.

Simply breaking the links doesn't work for some reason, so I've tried updating the source to reflect the current file. No luck there.
I've searched the workbook for the name of the link in question, searching for all formula for name itself as well as variants of "[" and ".xlms".
I don't see anything in the name manager referencing that external file.
I don't recall if I copied from that particular document, I may have as it was a duplicate file. I tried looking over the cells I believe I copied from it but didn't see the reference.
I've installed Kutools and Bill Manville (MS MVP) FindLink Tool. Both of which says there is no external link.
I've looked at the compatibility checker which basically just says, yes there is an external link but give no insight on how to address.
I've tried a couple of macros, some of which crashed excel, some of which simply said that there was an external link but not how to find it. In my frustration I forgot which one that was but I'm about to try that approach again and look for that code.

Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated!

According to the error, it's specifically calling out the link as a member of the defined names.

Can you screenshot the list of defined names and their contents?

The list is pretty massive, also there are a lot of unrelated #REFs but nothing that I can see referring to an external source.

Re: Cannot Find Link to External Workbook

I just realized the file path that it's referencing is a local file, which doesn't exist. If anything the file that would be referenced would be in a different location. My guess would be a temp file but the entire file path structure doesn't exist on my local/C drive.
That may explain why the link can't be broken but doesn't help me find the cell in question. Still looking for this one.

It's definitely in the defined names somewhere. I'd take the filepath that's being referenced, and write down the name of the imaginary sheet.

That word exists in your defined names somewhere.

Re: Cannot Find Link to External Workbook

I tried deleting the name referenced in the local connection but that did nothing because it wasn't being referenced anywhere that I could see.

Turns out there was a reference somewhere in conditional formatting that couldn't be searched. I removed all conditional formatting on a specific sheet, saved, closed and re-opened the file and the link was gone.

Re: Cannot Find Link to External Workbook

I came, I saw and I didn't find the answer I needed, but I'm grateful to those whose advice will solve others problems.

For anyone else this may help - my problem was in data validation linked to a list on an external spreadsheet which I did not know even existed within the sheet but had accidentally been left or copied in.

I discovered this by saving a copy of the workbook to experiment on (and an extra backup in case I accidentally changed the original). Then I deleted sheet by sheet until I found the sheet that was causing the problem. I tried various experiments: removing the conditional formatting; paste special values: clearing formats - but none of these solved the problem. So I deleted parts of the worksheet till I found the offending cells and then worked out it was the data validation rule.

    I hope this helps someone.
