Count blank cells up to today's date

I am currently working on an attendance spreadsheet. In the second to last column I would like it to count how many absences certain students have accumulated throughout the course. If there are too many absences, the students will obviously be required to retake the course. At this point, however, the "Absences" column is counting the blanks of the entire semester. I need to come up with a formula that only counts the blanks up to today's date.

The comment that I provided in my sample sheet is as follows:

I would like the formula in these boxes to only show the value of blank cells <= (less than or equal to) the current date. For example:

If today happened to be 9/16/2014, Cell Q3 would only show 1 Absence.
If today happened to be 11/9/2014, Cell Q3 would show 3 Absences.
