Having Excel add numerical data within same cell AND where there is text also

So, in my invoices, the "Description of Tasks" columns each look similar to the following entry for a single day:

Call to client (.25); Call to adjuster (.15); Draft offer (1.67)

I have been adding each of these decimal numbers by hand and placing the total in a cell to the right of the Description cells (which is labeled as the "Total Time For the Day" cell). Here that total would be 2.07.

Is there a way that I can have Excel add all of the decimal numbers in my Description of Task and place the total in the next cell in the row?

You could use a User Defined Function. There's not much error checking in this so it might be unhappy with data that looks less like the example.

Thank you very much. Unbelievably, I got it to work. I was so hoping the response would not be a User Defined Function because a net search prior to posting here hinted at having to do something other than click a box, and I am so Excel and Function illiterate. I am a spoiled, drag & drop Mac user who has never done "root" stuff, UDFs, or other things that are Greek to me, so I had no clue where/how to implement your pretty code, blah, blah.

YouTube to the rescue...I watched a gal, probably in her late 60's or early 70's (who made me feel really inadequate as her junior) create a UDF and copied her every move but pasting in your code.

It worked like a charm!!! One cell would not add up, and after taking out various text, punctuation marks, etc, I learned that I cannot use semi-colons in the text unless a number is in front of it (can't have: "Draft offer; Review offer; Print offer (.75);" but I can have "Draft offer, Review offer, Print offer (.75);") and I certainly can live with that uber tiny limitation for the hours it will save me.

Thank you again, and please thank your mom for making you smart (as I recall, most of the "smart genes" come from the mother)

Just below the word Title you will see a dropdown with the word No prefix.

Click Save
