    Percentage Growth between two years

    Hi There,

We are trying to work out the growth in net revenue between two years. I have been told that by using the standard formula of

(Year 2 - Year 1) / ABS (Year 2) is not the correct formula to use in this context, especially when it comes to negative numbers.

Our growth between years can differ quite a lot.

    Year 1 Year 2 Difference % Difference
    $106,523 $(44,222) $(150,744) (142)%
    $115,133 $63,758 $(51,375) (55)%
    $184,457 $405,797 $221,340 120%
    $140,421 $16,384 $(124,037) 88%

I have been advised that the % differences that I am showing using the above formula is not correct. Please help

    Thanks

Hmmm, Percent difference is usually to get the right sign:

    (Year 2 - Year 1)/Year 1

There is no meaningful calculation of YoY difference if the prior year is zero or negative. Financial journals agree.
