# Percentage Growth between two years

1. ## Percentage Growth between two years

Hi There,

We are trying to work out the growth in net revenue between two years. I have been told that by using the standard formula of

(Year 2 - Year 1) / ABS (Year 2) is not the correct formula to use in this context, especially when it comes to negative numbers.

Our growth between years can differ quite a lot.

Year 1 Year 2 Difference % Difference
\$106,523 \$(44,222) \$(150,744) (142)%
\$115,133 \$63,758 \$(51,375) (55)%
\$184,457 \$405,797 \$221,340 120%
\$140,421 \$16,384 \$(124,037) 88%

Thanks

Hmmm, Percent difference is usually to get the right sign:

(Year 2 - Year 1)/Year 1

3. ## Re: Percentage Growth between two years

There is no meaningful calculation of YoY difference if the prior year is zero or negative. Financial journals agree.
