    VLOOKUP Not Working Properly

    Hi there,

I can't figure out why my vlookup function isn't working as it should.

I have a spreadsheet of data with a search function in it. I've attached an example workbook to this post. Everything works except for the vlookup function in columns K through to T.

The workbook is a reference to locate different departments with my company and the mail trays their mail is to go to which is designated by a lettering system.

When i search for department "4", all the columns from A to K work properly, a few have the vlookup function and are working correctly but for some reason the last part is not working for the contact persons of the mail trays. The function is looking up the cell in column H and should be checking that with column K and then returning the name in Column L, but it's not doing this, its randomly showing other names.

    Example:
I type "4" into the yellow highlighted search, this then shows department 4 which is located at 2 Horne Street. Now the contact person should be Person 4 but this is where the vlookup function isn't working properly because its showing me Person 1 instead.

I hope someone can help ASAP!

    Thanks

Try INDEX/MATCH instead...VLOOKUP can be difficult when working with unsorted data. Try this formula in cell L6 and drag down:

Whoops, I think I interpreted your previous post incorrectly. Looking through your data and information more closely, I'm a little confused as to what you are trying to return since you have numerous columns, but only one input for which "Department" you want returned. Nevertheless, the three formulas below should be pasted into cells E6:G6, respectively:
