I am sure this is a very basic query for excel experts but I am not sure how to achieve this. I have a column with a time field in format hh:mm. Next to it I want to have a number column where I can enter a number of days. The calculation I would like to do, is take the number of days away from the hours in the first column. It doesn't have to occur in one column, if I need to have 2 columns to do this easily then that's perfectly fine. Can anyone help me with this? Thank you in advance

Im puzzled, you want to take days away from hours? I think you will need to provide a sample workbook, showing what you have and what you want.
Also, You need to understand this about dates...a date is just a number indicating how many days have passed since 1/1/1900, so today 7/11/14 is actually 41831. excel formats it into something that we recognise as a date (I know you said subtract days, not dates, but the principal remains)
Likewise with time...time is a decimal of 1 (day), so for instance 06:00 AM is actualy just 0.25, 12 noon is .05 and 06:00 PM (18:00) is 0.75. Again, excel formats it to something we see as a time

Oh yes, I have given a rather poor description there, and I've neglected a rather important part. My apologies, I'm new to this.
The bit I forgot is that I am working with 8 hour days in the calcs. the reason the first figure is in hours is because I need to report on average hours to achieve a service turn around, so this is to get the figure into the format the report requires. The reason I might need to take days away from that figure is to remove shipping delays from the first figure in instances where delays have occurred, and the person likely to enter this detail will only have the information of # of days this delay has incurred.
