VLOOKUP with Wildcard Text Search - Need some help

Hello All - I have a two tabbed spreadsheet that I'm having trouble getting VLOOKUP to work in.

Col A of Wksht 1 contains a string of text "TRAVEL EXPENSE - HGG: DD". Wksht 2 contains a running list of abbreviations like HGG in Col A and an expanded description in Col B "Hitchikers Guide Galaxy". Col A in Wksht 1 does vary sometimes in that some words might be abbreviated or spaced differently but the abbreviation will always tie out against the abbreviation in Wksht2.

I need to search text in Wksht 1, cross-reference Col A Wksht 2 and return the matching expanded description from Col B Wksht 2.

Ive tried =VLOOKUP("*"&A1&"*",Wksht2!$A1:$A50,2,TRUE) with no success. I keep getting an #N/A error.

Col A, Wksht 1 is not sorted alpha due to a prevailing system hierarchy, however Col A Wksht 2 is.

Can anyone assist? Happy to use Index/Match if that is simpler.

Thanks,
DerekBlain

Re: VLOOKUP with Wildcard Text Search - Need some help

Try =VLOOKUP("*"&A1&"*",Wksht2!$A1:$A50,2,FALSE)

If that doesnt work, upload a small sample workbook
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
2. If your question is resolved, mark it SOLVED using the thread tools
3. Click on the star if you think someone helped you

Thanks for the quick reply. Ya, changing true to false didn't get rid of the #N/A error. I'll try and upload something when I have a moment to do so. Thanks again.
