How do you count the number of dates that match a criteria

Hi, this is probaly easy but having difficulty with getting a result.

I have a list of dates, I needa formula to count the corresponding dates when a user enters a date into the criteria cell.

So if the date they are looking to count is today 01/12/14, and the list contains four instances of the date I need the number four to be displayed.
