put serial number as 1,23,4 for duplicate entry

Hi,

i have data where we found multiple duplicate entry and i dont want to delete it,

i just want to give diff serial number for each entry and keep it.

Example:
ritesh 1
ritesh 2
ritesh 3
raja 1
raja 2

it is not working,giving same result for all duplicate value,

i want consecutive numbers for each duplicate

like 2 for first entry
3 for secend
4 for third

Hi,

Double check the formula you are using. It was working when it left here! You've no doubt got the second A1 ref in the COUNTIF bit as an absolute rather than a relative.

Better still upload the workbook in which you have entered it and are claiming it doesn't work.
