I have two work sheets, the second worksheet has a list of data which i want to assign a number to so that if i need to input that data unto worksheet number one i will just have to enter the number and the data will transfer unto worksheet number one with out having to retype or copy and paste the data.
Based on limited information, you could use a COUNTA function. Assuming your data on Sheet2 starts in cell A1 and is filled downward, paste this in cell B1 (or insert a new row next to your data if it is currently occupied) and paste this formula, then drag down to fill:

Im' not sure I understood; But I was thinking of using the vlookup function which would retrieve data from sheet2 to sheet1 depending on the value I entered in Sheet1.

this is my workbook and in worksheet number two i have an arrow that points to and e.g of the information i need to assign a number to in order to have it replicated into worksheet number one
Make a drop down Data Validation list from column A, then use VLOOKUP to bring back the data from the selected option(s).
