    Counting cells by "matching" headers and rows

    I need a formula that will count results in multiple cells that are identified by both column headers and rows. See my excel portions attached.

    Use the subtotal function in combination with a filter.

    This is probably way too simplistic....
    =COUNTIF($D$4:$L$17,"CM")
