    Survey data decisioning

I am surveying 5,000 people. I have 8 questions using a 5 point Likert scale response (Strongly agree to Strongly disagree).

I want the end of the survey to dynamically score people based on their answers and serve 3 outcomes (eg. happy, ok, sad)

I have applied weights to each question. Eg. Question 1 = weight 7 and I've scored the answers 1 - 5. Therefore, if I strongly disagree my score is 35.

Is there a technique that I can use in Excel to work out what the breaks are in the scores. Eg. 175+ = high, 100-175 = medium, <100 = low. Basically, I need to more scientifically calculate the breaks. I need to set these breaks before I survey people (i.e. I'm working with the survey design rather than response data).

    thanks

Do you mean this or something different?

    =LOOKUP(A1,{0,100,175},{"Low","Medium","High"})

Given a score in A1 if it's 0-100 its low, 100-175 medium, over 175 is High.

That will be really useful for the project. However, I'm trying to determine what scores should create the high, medium and low bandings. Is there a statistic formula that can determine those breaks?

    Dunno. But.

You can, from your weightings, etc, calculate the minimum and maximum scores. In the attached - scores can run from 40 to 200. One way would then be to assign the bandings on the basis of a percentile... 1/3 high, 1/3 in the middle and 1/3 low.

Glenn, that's very kind of you. Thank you.

I'm racking my brain and can't think of a more mathematically sound solution. But, I think your suggestion of assigning bandings 1/3, 1/3, 1/3 is good. Thanks for your methodology for calculating the min and max also.

Thanks Glenn. Reputation feedback done. I'll leave open for now in case anyone else has a different perspective on a statistics-based solution.

    thanks again
