Need to formula to substitute a zero for a full number without removing exsisting formula

I am working on a spread sheet (Traveling on various trips Calculations) and I have a 2 stage entry where I put in the morning travel distance and on another line I add the afternoon travelling distance, in an attachment I have the layout for you to look at, is it possible to have a formula so that I can just insert the number for the " 0 " in the ' overnight line ' I require without it removing the entire calculation formula when you just insert a number, please.

Why are you even using the formula =$F2+0-$F2 (or similar) when F2 is blank ... I don't see the point of this formula.

The data for the 'Lunch stop' is entered in manually e.g. D2 174, so why not just enter 0 into D3.

    Hi Ursul
I have just worked out that I have attached the oldest of the spread sheet for the example instead of the latest one I am using. I cant work out how to delete the attachment and to replace it.

It should read =-$D4+153 Allow for lines 3 & 4 in this example Total trip is 153 klms Lunch stop data added manually is 75 klms which is then deducted form line 4 for that calculation. When I am going thru planning a trip I go through the whole trip only adding the O/Night figures at first just to keep a tally on Klms per day. Then later on I come back adding in the lunch time stops after checking locations on google earth.

    Hi Mills49,

Shame you can't upload the newer version because working on what you have just said you will end up with 'circular error' appearing when you open the workbook because cell E5 states =SUM(D$4:$D5) but now you are working out D5 with a formula which is in this formula. The only numbers you should be manually inserting are the 2 kilometre readings be they 174 & 0, or 75 & 78 ... the rest of the spreadsheet can be completed with formulas.

Sorry but I'm still a little confused. Cheers

    Hi mills49,

OK have a look at this - the layout is a little different but once you enter in the daily totals the formulas for the totals will work (of course on a sheet with more data you will need to use the 'fill-down')

    Example Trip Calculations-01.xlsx
