    Symbols in Formulas

    Hi,

Is it possible to have formulas return a symbol?

I'm hoping to have a % change formula, in which a value below 0% would show the % change & a down arrow; and a value above 0% would show the % change and an up arrow.

I've tried inputting the symbols in the actual formula, but the symbol doesn't maintain and is converted to an "a" w/ an accent
I've also tried referencing a cell w/ the symbol, but that didn't work either

    Is this possible?
    Thank you!

You need to change the font in the cell in which the formula appears.

If you have the possibility to create another column in the sheet, you could ask the formula to return CHAR(226) or CHAR(225) in place of what it currently returns and change the font to Wingdings.

    Hope this helps.

You can also use conditional formatting. Highlight your range, go to the home tab > conditional formatting > icon sets and select the arrows. You can then adjust these to whatever parameters you wish.

I attached sample for your reference. If I am not wrong, I think this is what you want. Like seasider89 said, this is used by conditional formatting.

Can you elaborate - how would I use a custom number format to return the triangle? I'm not seeig that option when I use the format cells dialog

Try using Right click >> format cell >> click Custom in the Category list box >> Copy and paste 0%▲;-0%▼;0% there where General is written.

thats how we apply custom formatting.
