Calculate number of occurrences of text in the past 12 months

I have looked around here and am not seeing something already answering my question, so if I have missed out on the answer, I apologize.

I have a spreadsheet that has column A containing dates that data was entered going back as much as 3 years.
Column B has a list of results, such as "pass" fail" or "discontinued" in it.
What I am trying to do is create a cell or cells that will automatically look back over the past 12 months in column A from today (not from the latest entry, but from today) and tell me how many of those entries in column B have the word "pass", another will tell me how many have the word "fail", etc.
In other words, can someone help me with the formula that will count the occurrences in column B in the past 12 months in column A from today?
