Want to know how to change a vale to text while i am filling in data

Hi all,
I'm pretty new to Excels so forgive me if I don't make sense.
I'm filling in data on a spreadsheet, and I want to change the number 1, to the word Attended while I am filling in data.
I've tried to use IF and REPLACE formulas and conditional formatting, but obviously, typing data over the formulas means erasing it.
Again I apologise for my noobiness, but I am very stuck! Any help or ideas would be appreciated

This almost fixed it! Unfortunately, it affects the date that I am typing in too, so I can't really use it for a long term solution. (I have 4000+ bits of data to manually input )
