Solved - Problem with sort a-z function

I thought I have evolved beyond sorting problems. However, I have a spreadsheet with drivers, seniority #, and job assignments each in separate columns. I am trying to sort a-z to produce the result 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.... ...308, 309, 310.
What I am getting is; 1, 10, 100, 101, 102, 103... ...11, 110, 111...
What am I doing wrong

That's because they are text. Make sure the cells are not formatted as Text, select the column, text to columns, finish. Then sort.

If you leave Excel's default alignment alone ("General"), numbers align right and text left, which makes it obvious.

Excel would most likely fail to do this if the cells are not in number format or there are additional, unseen characters that prevent them from being recognized as the numbers you see. Have you changed the format to numbers? happy to look at a template of the same values
