    Variation of the LEFT function

    Hi Y'all

Looking for a variation of the LEFT function

I need to isolate from I161-0000, for example, 161. Using the LEFT function or the LEFT in conjunction with the FIND function I can only isolate it to I161.

    Can you help?

    Thanks
    Patish

It would appear to me that you want the =MID() function https://support.office.com/en-us/art...8-4ecb12433028

Re: Variation of the LEFT function

What is special about 161? What are you looking for?

If you simply want the three characters starting on the second character, then you want

Do you want everything before the '-'?

    Can you post more examples?

Three digits between - and I.

All the numbers are in the following format ixxx-xxxx where x are digits.

Re: Variation of the LEFT function

Can you provide more samples and show your expected outcome?
Maybe =mid(a1,2,3) (which is exactly what 6string gave)
If you need it to be a value, instead of text...
    =--mid(a1,2,3)
