# Basic formula producing #VALUE!

1. ## Basic formula producing #VALUE!

I have a spreadsheet and I am trying to subtract a value in column A with the value in column B and I cannot seem to get a numerical value. It keeps reflecting #VALUE!.

Can anyone help me?

2. ## Re: Basic formula producing #VALUE!

Sounds like either A and/or B is not a real number, just a text string that looks like a number.

What do these return
=ISNUMBER(A1)
=ISNUMBER(B1)

A1 = false
b1 = true

I am having trouble getting the numbers in column A into a real number. When I use the VALUE formula, it returns #VALUE!

What is actually in A1 ?

Can you post a sample file?
Make sure there is just enough data to demonstrate your need. Include a BEFORE sheet and an AFTER sheet in the workbook if needed to show the process you're trying to complete or automate. Make sure your desired results are shown, mock them up manually if necessary.

Remember to desensitize the data.

I actually tried attaching my spreadsheet to the original post multiple times but it wouldn't upload even though it was only 13 KB. Regardless, I was messing around and just figured out how to get the value into a real number.

If anyone reads this later and wants to know what I did, I am providing the info below.
My values in column A and B looked like this: 11111111.
I copied the values in column A and pasted it into notebook.
When I pasted it into notebook, the number looked like this: "11111111".
In notebook, I chose Edit, Replace, Find What = ", and chose replace all.
The " around the number was then removed.
I then copy and pasted the numbers from notebook into excel and it worked.

Thank you for trying to help!

Excel should be able to do that as well with the Find/Replace tool to remove the quote marks.
