    COS not giving correct answers

I want to find the cosine of a degree measure. My formula is =COS(DEGREES(G4)) where G4 is (-56.3). The answer excel spits out is -0.79, while my calculator says it is 0.55. I'm not sure where the incorrect answer is coming from, because -0.79 isn't the correct answer in radians either.

This is Excel '13 and this calculation is part of a college physics lab.

Re: COS not giving correct answers

If G4 is in degrees, then use =cos(radians(G4))

If it's in radians, use =cos(G4)

The angle must be in radians.

Wow, that's a little counterintuitive, don't you think? Thanks for helping, guys!

Re: COS not giving correct answers

No, it's pretty intuitive. Radians are the natural measure of an angle, and the algorithms (Taylor series) that calculate trig functions all use radians. Degrees is an arbitrary division into 360 degrees.
