unable to resolve a #NUM! error message

I have a column of cells using the nper function in them. They refer to cells in their respective rows. The cells referred to are input with numbers as $'s or % with no reference to other cells.

A few of the cells in the column are returning the #NUM! Error, even though the others cells above and below are not. The problem cells are formatted exactly the same as the problem free cells.

I have tried deleting the problem cells and re entering the formulas. I have tried re entering the numbers in the source cells, being sure that the format is the same as the cells above and below. Even tried using the formula in a cell outside of my table referring to the source cells in the problem row. That cell returned the #NUM! Error as well.

    Any solutions?

Re: unable to resolve a #NUM! error message

What answer do you expect in those that are returning NUM? My first guess would be that something in the inputs in those cases causes the internal algorithm for the NPER() function to fail, and this error is Excel's way of saying that this combination of inputs does not yield an answer. If you can enter the same inputs into an alternative calculator and get a reasonable answer, then you may need to consider alternatives to the NPER() function. If you enter the same inputs into an alternative calculator and it returns an error as well, that would suggest that that set of inputs does not have a solution.

    thanks Mr Shorty

Did manual calc. NPER couldn't calculate amortization number because of negative amortization: interest carry was more than payment, so no amortization of principal could be calculated.

(How to) Upload a Workbook directly to the Forum
(please do not post pictures or links to worksheets)
    • Click Advanced (next to quick post),
    • Scroll down until you see "Manage Attachments",
    • Click that then select "add files" (top right corner).
    • Click "Select Files" find your file, click "open" click "upload"
    • Once the upload is completed the file name will appear below the input boxes in this window.
    • Click "Done" at bottom right to close the Attachment Manager.
    • Click "Submit Reply"

Re: unable to resolve a #NUM! error message

I am not financial analyst, but that sounds to me like the inputs were bad for those incidences of the function.

Does that "resolve" the NUM error for you then, or is there still more to your question?
