    Bin-Packing Problem formula in Excel

    Hi,

    Anyone here who know Bin-Packing Problem? How will I compute the total item I can load in a container if there are multiple items with different sizes.. I'd like to come up with excel format for this problem.
    Need your help, hope someone can answer my question. A million thanks to those who will answer.

    Why re-invent the wheel?

    It would have been quicker and easier for you to use google, it will take me longer to post this reply than it did to find the solution.

    This is an old thread but it was linked in a new one as a possible solution. Unfortunately the only solution offered in this thread requires membership at the linked organization to be able to download it. So quicker is not always better. One must take a moment to verify what one is offering.

    This is a rather complexes problem as you may need a program that can handle three dimensional "items" and I don't think the "limited" excel solver is up to it.

    If all the items have the same height then the problem will become a two dimensional one and much easier to solve as the program only have to consider "length" and "width" when solving the problem. Still it's a fairly complicated problem but at least it is a linear one and the freebie "OpenSolver" should be able to tackle it I guess.

    You best option I think is to buy a third party program for loading containers and trucks unless you can write or find a suitable algorithm that you can add to an excel spread sheet.
