Auto Number formating

Hello:

I enter lots of SS# in column L.
I need user to enter 123456789 or 123-45-6789 and it should automatically format to xxx-xx-xxxx.
I have tried doing custome format but seems not to work.
Also want to restrict the user if he enters any number more or less then 9 digit.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Assuming data in A2
You can set up data validation by going to Data Validation, Custom and enter =LEN(A2)=9. to limit number to 9 digits

Then format cell as Special, and select Social Security
