    Angry Coursework trouble

    Hi All,
I am currently doing my A level ICT coursework and need a formula which allows me to choose a price from some criteria. These are a type of van and season type (low, mid, high season). I will attach the task for the coursework for you to attempt. Thankyou for the help

    Re: Coursework trouble

It would not be ethical for us to attempt this for you (I am speaking to you as a teacher myself). You must do coursework yourself. Please read the first page of the assignment, where the exam board (OCR) states:

You must not be given, either individually or as a group, any assistance, verbal or written, in the carrying out of the tasks or evidence to produce.
EDIT: This rule is the same with all coursework and controlled assessments for all UK and overseas exam boards (I used to be an exam officer, so I know my facts).

I don't think you can expect us to do your homework for you - see the FAQ and the Forum Rules to find out what the approach to homework is on this Forum.

EDIT: this line removed, on AliGW's suggestion.

    Hope this helps.

    Re: Coursework trouble

Pete - please note my post above, which quotes from the first page of the coursework assignment. We are not allowed to offer any help at all, so you will need to edit your post to remove the advice.

EDIT: Sorry, but I was not able to PM you!

..and while you're reading Forum Rules, please have a look at the bit about thread titles as well

@ Ali, the 'notes to candidates' in the box below the instructions appear to contradict the instructions themselves. I read note 1b as a few pointers being permissible if the candidate declares this in their notes, maybe suggesting what they should be trying rather than how they should do it?

Yes, but how are you proposing to check that the help has been declared? We don't even know the poster's real name, let alone where he/she is studying. In addition, the OP said:

I will attach the task for the coursework for you to attempt.
which is asking for more than a pointer or two!!!

I agree, but the same could be true of any candidate for any course, regardless of the source of guidance, not just those asking for help here.

I did read the original question in the same light as 'have you finished my homework yet?' but thought that comment might be a bit too un-subtle.

I'm a teacher by profession. I have to rely on my pupils being honest about help they have sought and received. They have to sign a document saying that it is all their own work and I have to countersign it, noting any help they claim to have received. If you can be absolutely sure that the OP is going to reveal the help received here to his or her teacher, then by all means, go ahead and offer the help. Unfortunately, as I have to try to navigate my way through this on a day-to-day basis, my advice not to give any help stands.

    Re: Coursework trouble

The promise of not seeking/receiving any help is between the Teacher and the Student.
It does not bind anyone else anywhere in the world, especially not on an Internet Forum.
If someone wants to help, so be it. The student is only cheating him/her self.

As far as the this forum goes, I don't see a rule prohibiting helping people with homework.
It is in the FAQ (not the rules). However, the FAQ does say we can answer 'specific' questions and/or 'Point in the right direction'.
I think suggesting Vlookup or Index/Match qualifies as 'Pointing in the right direction'.

Personally, I don't like doing peoples homework for other reasons (not because of rules).

    Re: Coursework trouble

I would have thought that someone doing an A level assignment (which, for the benefit of those in other countries, is the highest level you would undertake at school, usually aged 17 to 18) would have come across functions to look up and retrieve data from a table, so giving the names of suitable functions (which they may be confused about) and referring them to XL Help does not constitute a significant level of help.

    Re: Coursework trouble

FWIW, I wouldn't respond to a thread, like this one, that is so blatantly obviously homework - ever. If I'm in doubt I'd ask; and - if the OP then stated it was homework - I'd INSIST on seeing a workbook showing what they'd already tried.

For me, the important issue is getting them to "show willing", to show some evidence of having had a go. Then I'll help... not otherwise. I DO have a lot of time for Ali's opinion; having being involved in tertiary education for some time.

    Re: Coursework trouble

    Admin standpoint---
Nothing is more frustrating than to be working on homework and to get stuck. Without guidance, you might have no hope of finishing the assignment before the deadline. The Internet can be a big help in that respect, but without learning how to get the right answer, asking others to solve your homework questions for you simply becomes a downward spiral (and it's cheating).

We do not want to contribute to you cheating yourself out of your education, but we also acknowledge that seeking assistance to learn a concept is a legitimate request.

If you are genuinely interested in receiving help in the form of tutoring or coaching, then please rephrase the title of your original post to clearly indicate you are seeking coaching or tutoring help. Any forum members (who are willing to assist as a tutor) will modify their responses accordingly to facilitate your learning. Tutors don't tell you the answers, they help you figure it out for yourself; so don't expect answers, expect suggestions, or just plain hints. Also, be specific in describing the function/formula or technique you trying to learn, and tell us what you have attempted so far. Otherwise, expect your plea for homework answers to be ignored.

So...tell us what you have tried, what that gave you compared to what you expected.

edit: OK, I guess they marked this SOLVED, so no further discussion needed
