    Index/Match or VLookup

I, for the life of me, cannot figure out why this isn't returning what I want, nor why it is returning what it is.

I am trying to get a table to tell me whether a position if offense or defense. While I know what it really is, this table is part of a bigger "program" if you will.

    The Index Match version:

I have no idea why it will not return "Offense" when putting in WR (or QB, RB, TE).The red text is the value it is returning. Regardless of position I enter. Except for DE. If you put in DE, it'll return the result "N/A".

    Here is the VLookup version:

Don't know why it's not returning any value there either.

Any help would be much appreciated!

probably best to upload your sheet to see what is happening

however my guess would be the names are not totally the same maybe there is a space in somewhere?

    Re: Index/Match or VLookup

Wow.. I've been trying to figure that out all night and all it takes is a little "0". I thought that part of the argument was optional. But, apparently this option needed to be mandatory, lol. Thanks a lot.

Any insight into why the vlookup wouldn't work? Granted, the Index/Match yields the same result, I would like to see why vlookup isn't working.

Edit: just saw you posted my answer already. Thanks again.. You're awesome
