    Counting Wins and Losses

    Hey guys.

So, I need your help again. This time I need help with COUNTIFS formula.

    sample3.xlsx

As you can see from my file, I have 2 sheets. My MAIN DATA is in Sheet 1.

What I want to know is this:

    1. What formula should I use to count how many wins and loss did both teams made. On sheet 2, B3, should display the number of WINS and on C3 the number of Loss of A3.
Same goes for the other team, the wins of A4 should display on B4 while loss should be on C4.

    2. I've tried the COUNTIFS formula for this. Unfortunately, it only give me 0 as return. I am not sure what's going on there.
The code I used for Win is this:

    And for loss:

Please let me know whats wrong with my formula. Thanks a lot guys!

    Re: Counting Wins and Losses

Countifs is doing a 1-to-1 comparison of cells in the same row.

Since EVIL GENIUSES is in row C5, the word WIN needs to be in G5 if it's going to match.

    Solutions:
    1) Unmerge G3:G7 and put WIN in G5

    2) Merge C3:C7 so it matches the merge in G3:G7

One or the other. Then your Countifs will start working.

    Re: Counting Wins and Losses

I see. I figured COUNTIFS doesn't work on merged cells. So, I unmerged it and placed WIN on G3 but still not working. I didn't know it has to be aligned with C5. That was my mistake.

I have another query if you don't mind, instead of using COUNTIFS is there any other alternative? Let's say I want to keep the on cell G3:G7 to stay merged and leave C column as it is. Is there any other possible way? Sorry for the question, I just want to expand my knowledge here.

    Re: Counting Wins and Losses

The reason I ask is because I have another problem.

On this new workbooksample3.xlsx I am looking to count the Win and Loss again. But it's somehow different this time.

Since you've told me that COUNTIFS only work on a 1-on-1 situation, I don't think COUNTIFS would work for this.

    Anyway, here is the situation:

I basically still want the WIN and LOSS count. On Sheet1 is still the Main Data. This time I'm looking to count texts from E column.
On Sheet2 will be table for the WIN and LOSS.
I am looking to find WIN and LOSS of those from A9:A22. On B9:B22 should be the WIN and C9:C22 should be the LOSS.

The layout you have is very decorative but it's not really a "data" layout, it's a human eye visual representation.

Data is one row having all the key information used for analysis of that data. Having WIN in only one cell in middle of a bunch of cells above and below it relates to doesn't work IMO.

Yeah I figured. Apparently, it's easier for me to understand the data this way though. You see, I didn't thought it would be this hard to come up with all the results from each data with this kind of set-up.

Guess, I just have to change my layout then. Now, working on it.

Also, have to avoid using merge cells.

    Re: Counting Wins and Losses

I think I have all the formula I need to run my data. Unfortunately, my worksheet takes some time to calculate everything. Is it because I was using too much COUNTIF formula or what? Whats the remedy for this sir?
