How can I use a date in a formula without it converting to Julian?

I have a list of names in column A and a list of dates in column B.

In column C, I'm simply trying to write the formula: =A1&" "&B1

But the date part is coming through as a Julian Date rather than just a normal date. Is there any way of stopping this?

    Example:

    NameOne 04/01/2016

    Formula returns: NameOne 42373

UPDATE: I have discovered how to do this myself

    New formula: =A1&" "&TEXT(B1,"dd/mm/yyyy")
