Index / Match not displaying properly on open

Hi, I am stumped.

I have a large spreadsheet that essentially looks at other spreadsheets to bring various data points into one easy-to-view place. I had VLOOKUP formulas everywhere at one time. But in six instances I tried to once and for all master the INDEX / MATCH. It worked! Then I noticed that when I open the spreadsheet all the Index/Match columns are at zero. If I go out and open all six "child" spreadsheets, then immediatly close them, the Index/Match is now populated with the correct numbers. I don't have to do anything except open the files and then click the upper right corner "X" to shut them down. I don't understand what is going on. All my VLOOKUP formulas are live as soon as the "adult" spreadsheet is opened without a need to open the other workbooks.

Some formulas do not work on closed workbooks. Google to Excel closed workbooks find out what they are.

Wow I never knew that. I've used V and H Lookups for so long that it would never have occurred to me that Index/match only works with a cache of the last open.... thanks!
