Formatting problem - text okay, numbers invisible on Gantt chart

I like the fact that on the attached Gantt chart one can type in to the main part of the chart without it affecting the time bars - as they are done with conditional formatting. However this only works for text - if I type a number in, it's not visible.

Does anyone have any thoughts on why this might be please?

Thanks in anticipation - I attach the file.

just increase the column width, then you can see the numbers too.

Because your columns are too thin.
    Make them slightly wider.

Thank you both for that point - you are both correct but unfortunately it won't function as a Gantt chart without the narrow columns. Do you know why it is okay with text (the text just flows into the next columns where necessary) but not with numbers?

I can put an apostrophe before the number so it's seen as text but then that cell can't be used in calcs.

Is there a way of formatting it so the numbers will show please?

Or, type your number as text: '1234
That is, precede your number with an apostrophe (single-quote character). Excel will interpret it as text.
