SUMPRODUCT formula with multiple criteria (?)

I believe what I'm looking for is a SUMPRODUCT formula that counts the number of times a set of initials appear according to the dates they correspond to in a table. I hope the table helps to explain what I'm getting at. I'd like to have the formula in E2, F3 and G4 to show how many times WG, SR and RB were assigned to the dates 3/1, 3/2 and 3/4, respectively in A2:B7. Thank you!

If I'm understanding you correctly, you should be able to paste the formula below in E2, then fill right and down to cover each closer/date combination:

=COUNTIFS($B:$B,E$1,$A:$A,$D2)
