Unhappy Conditional Formatting (if MULTIPLE cells contain ANY text & not numbers)

New to excel and thoroughly enjoying it. So far have been managing just fine on my own until now! (ps I don't really understand excel lingo that great but I'll explain as best I can).

Example: I'd like cells A1:D10 to highlight a certain colour IF it has: any text (any letter) but **not** a number. I know how to do this for individual cells just fine but I am sure there has to be an easier way than manually entering it for each of the 100+ cells and for the life of me I cannot work it out!

    Appreciate your help!

Re: Conditional Formatting (if MULTIPLE cells contain ANY text & not numbers)

Okay, do you want the entire area (A1:D10) to change color if ANY of the cells has text and none of the cells have numbers?
    or
do you want the individual cell (in the range of A1:D10) to change color if it has text, not a number?

    and

when you say, it doesn't have a number, do you mean there's not a stand alone number in the range (i.e. A5= 72)
    or
do you mean that the cell with text does not also contain a number (like A5= MG123)?

    My 2?

substitute commas with semi-colons if your region settings requires

Re: Conditional Formatting (if MULTIPLE cells contain ANY text & not numbers)

    Hiya thanks for the response:

    1. I want individual cells to be higlighted

    2. The cells originally contain a number which I overwrite with a person's name (which I then want highlighted). I have a LOT of ppl so it can't be an exact name - hence the request for it to highlight on text only (without a number)

    thanks!

    Try these steps:

    1) Using you mouse, select cell A1 in the worksheet.

    2) In the Excel Office Ribbon, go to Home > Conditional Formatting > Manage Rules

    3) Press "New Rule" and choose "Use a formula to determine which cells to format"

    4) Enter this text for the rule: =iserror(1*A1)

    5) Press Format button, go to the fill tab, pick your color and press OK.

    6) Press OK once more.

    7) In Applies To field, use your mouse to select the rest of the range A1:A10, then press enter, then press OK.

Okay, let us know if this doesn't work
    Select Cells A1:D10
    Conditional Formatting>New Rule>Use Formula...

= ISTEXT(A1) Format > background of appropriate color.
    Does that work for you?
