Maximum Length of Formula in Excel 2011?

I'm working on a very long and complicated formula in Excel and after putting several hours into it, I got to a point where excel told me my formula was too long before I could complete everything I wanted in the formula. So, now I'm pretty sure I wasted all of that time because without being able to finish it, everything I was able to do is useless.

So, my first question is:
What is the maximum length of a formula? Whether it's a maximum number of functions, number of characters, etc.

My second question is:
Is there a way to get around the max so I can finish it?

You should consider using a user defined Function.

This would make a dramatic change.

Alternatively use one or more helper columns to simplify your final formula.

If you are using the same sub formula several times within your formula then calculate that in a helper column
Then you only need to use the Column Address in your Final Formula.

What is the maximum length of a formula? Whether it's a maximum number of functions, number of characters, etc.

Starting in Excel 2007 a formula can be up to 8,192 characters long and have up to 64 levels of nested functions.

I think a user defined function will definitely help. I've never made one before or messed with the visual basic editor so I spent the night looking at tutorials and reading up on it. Once I get it figured out I think it's going to make my project a million times easier!
