I wish to be able to have a column set up with a formula.
Call it column J, with formula =2*A1*B1.
The tricky part for me is that data is not in A1 or B1 yet.
How can i set up the J column's formula to update with the added data?

Try this:
=IFERROR(2*A1*B1,"")

thanks for the quick reply, it did not work. it does the first cell's calculation right, but then seems to just paste that value down the column instead of performing the calc each time
Attach a sample workbook. Make sure there is just enough data to demonstrate your need. Include a BEFORE sheet and an AFTER sheet in the workbook if needed to show the process you're trying to complete or automate. Make sure your desired results are shown, mock them up manually if necessary.
Remember to desensitize the data.
Click on GO ADVANCED and then scroll down to Manage Attachments to open the upload window.
Make sure calculation is set to Automatic.
I don't have Excel 2016 but in Excel 2013 it's located at:
Formulas tab>Calculation Options>Automatic
