Link excel file to workbook "=IF(ISBLANK('Sheet1!A1),"",'Sheet1!A1) " is this reliable?

    Dear Forum,

I would like to get clarification and guidance from you all. I have the following situation.

I am maintaining a dynamic master data set, which contains more than 50 column. I would like to generate nearly 7 - 8 part of automatic report table from specific columns from the master data set, pertaining to that, i have set up another workbook especially for report generation and have applied ARRAY formula for automatic report generation. I never added any sheet in the master data set and do not want to disturb the master data set.

Further to get the data from master data set, i want to link master data set to respective workbook sheets and I have applied the below given formula.

    =IF(ISBLANK('Sheet1!A1),"",'Sheet1!A1)

Is it safe and reliable? will it make any error or disadvantage. Kindly guide me.

    Regards

Sounds that you could better use Pivot Table

    Dear Mr. Zbor,

Good morning, have a great day and thanks for your guidance. First of all, my plan to set up an automatic report generation. if i use pivot table each and every time i have to go and refresh. That is why i have use the separate workbook with formula for auto generation.

Kindly suggest and guidance for linking workbooks with safe and reliable formula.

    Thanks in advance

    Hi friend,

Yes, when i am using "Pivot" word, really i was looking around here.. hehehehhe.. as i said, earlier i am anticipate to incorporate automation function in my MIS system. Hope you understand. Yes, i learned about pivot table, which is also show accurate and reliable records / data when we use. But each and every time, we have to go and refresh, if we update in master data set. do you agree? or not?

    No i don't agree.

What do you mean by go and refresh?

Yes you have to refresh (unless you use VBA) for that.

But you don't have to make a new pivot table for the analyses.

Did you make a table of your data.

    Insert => data

after you add new data to your table the table will automatic expands (and only need a refresh in the pivot table to get also the new data in it).

See the underline, that is what i prefer automation and never prefer "PIVOT Table"
