    What type of data is it? Text? Numbers? Could be both? Something else?

    Maybe this...

    ='C:\Users\Me\Documents\Data\Monday.xls]Sheet1'!$Z$9:INDEX('C:\Users\Me\Documents\Data\Monday.xls]Sheet1'!$Z$9:$Z$65536;COUNTA('C:\Users\Me\Documents\Data\Monday.xls]Sheet1'!$Z$9:$Z$65536))

    @Tony Valko
    It doesn't work for me.
    How about the formula below? If the reference file is closed the result is #VALUE, but if the reference file is open the result is the data on MYDATA.

    MYDATA = name range on closed reference file
    NO = name range on closed reference file
