calculate a average based on multiple criteria

Currently I can get my athletes average of ALL their results over multiple years and by setting 1 criteria to determine the particular event I want the average of. What I am trying to do is further break it down to filter it fore each year.

for example for events I have - GS, Slalom, DH

I am currently using this formula to filter them to just count their GS results. =AVERAGEIF(E36:E300,"=GS*",G36:G300)

FYI Column E36:E300 is where the events are listed and G36:300 is where the actual results are entered

So what I need to do is add a further filter that will only include the chosen year - 2006 (FYI the year column is A36:A300)


Any help with this would be very much appreciated as it is driving me crazy!!!!

What exactly is this criteria supposed to mean:

"=GS*"

Is the asterisk being used as a wildcard?
