Formula to Determine How Many Times Someone Is Scheduled

    =COUNTIF(B9:AA24,"NAME*")+COUNTIF(B30:AA30,"SM*")

When I try to split the formula above by columns I get an error and it no longer computes. What i need should look something like this:
    =COUNTIF(c9:e24,"NAME*")+(F9:H24,"NAME*")+0.5+(I9:Z24,"NAME*")+(AA9:AC24,"NAME*")+0.5+COUNTIF(B30:AA30,"SM*")

Ideally the formula would count how many times a staff members name is typed in the worksheet and count it as 1 (which we interpret as 1 hour though I know that isn't the case) for the formulas with .5 behind it is because we need it to count that particular column as 1.5

Any help would be appreciated I've tried everything I can think of and can't get it to cooperate.

I get a general sense of what you are doing but the details are not clear.

What does this mean: "for the formulas with .5 behind it is because we need it to count that particular column as 1.5"

I think it would help to attach your file, and give an example of the result you want.

Under the text box where you type your reply click the Go Advanced button. On the next screen scroll down and click on Manage Attachments, which will show a pop-up window to Select and Upload a file. Then close the window.

For starters you need a COUNTIF in front of the other pieces of your formula.
    Hope that helps.

Why have separate COUNTIFs for "NAME*" when the ranges they refer to comprise a contiguous range?

    COUNTIF(C9:E24,"NAME*")
    COUNTIF(F9:H24,"NAME*")
    COUNTIF(I9:Z24,"NAME*")
    COUNTIF(AA9:AC24,"NAME*")

Those can be replaced with a single COUNTIF:

    COUNTIF(C9:AC24,"NAME*")

Yes. I know. But NENE517 has written this formula above, where COUNTIF is missing in some places. So I wanted to know if I got his problem or not?

Re: Formula to Determine How Many Times Someone Is Scheduled

Because COUNTIF: F9:H24 and AA9:AC24 need to count as 1.5 whereas the others should count for just 1.

I hope I'm explaining myself well
