Can't get SUM if to work...

So I have this formula...=SUMIF(E4:E86,D4:D86 = "US") and it keeps displaying 0 even thought E4 contains 2. I'm trying to add up our teams scores on a schedule. I understand this has a sum_range, but I've understood this to be optional.

    Any suggestions?

    Try this :

In your case sum range is not optional. Because your criteria range and sum range is not the same.

Thanks SANRAM. It works, but I guess I didn't fully understand the sum_range. What exactly is sum_range and what makes it relevant (I've never used it).

Also, How would I make this work on two different sections.

Column D = Team names (US or THEM)
    Column E = Teams score
Column F = Team name (US or THEM)
    Column G = Team Score

any idea what the formula would be if I wanted to calculate all the team scores when the team name = US in either column D or E?

SUMIF formula contains 3 part in it. 1st one is Criteria Range. In your case it is D4:D86 as you are trying to match whether there remain "US". 2nd part is Criteria. In your case it's "US". 3rd part is Sum Range. In your case this is E4:E86 as you are summing the values from that range.

Now if you were summing the values of your criteria range then the sum range is not needed. For example :

Here sum range is not needed.
