IF formula and Tally for months of the year

    Hi all.

    Quick question

    I have a spreadsheet

Coloum A lists the months of the year (1-12)

What I’m wanting is the spilt the year up into quarters (based on the school year) and get excel to tell me which quarter each month falls into for all the data points (DOBs)

    So quarter 1 = 9-11, quarter 2 = 12-2, quarter 3 = 3-5, quarter 4 = 6-8

I then want Excel to tally up the no. of students in each quarter.

This seems easy, but I cant get my head around it.

    Any ideas?
    Thanks

you can use this to allocate the Quarter.

Then you can use SUMIF to provide the detail by quarter

    =IF(OR(A1=9,A1=10,A1=11),"Q1",IF(OR(A1=12,A1=1,A1=2),"Q2",IF(OR(A1=3,A1=4,A1=5),"Q3",IF(OR(A1=6,A1=7,A1=8),"Q4","n/a"))))

    Or this:

    =CHOOSE(A1,"Q2","Q2","Q3","Q3","Q3","Q4","Q4","Q4","Q1","Q1","Q1","Q2")

Your SUMIFS will depend on the data layout: what does it look like?
