    Conditional formatting using a formula

I'm trying to do conditional formatting based on a VLOOKUP formula, when I plug this formula into a cell I get a TRUE value so I know the formula works correctly but when I try to use it as a conditional formatting rule it fails.

    =VLOOKUP([@Number],'[Change Control Status_SHP.xlsx]1-23-2017'!$A$1:$A$1000,1,FALSE)=[@Number]

Excel returns an alert saying that the number I'm using is not valid, any ideas?

I don't think you can use structured referencing in conditional formatting.

Try it using A1 referencing and see if that works.

Thanks for the response, I tried it out but now it's saying I can't reference outside workbooks in conditional formatting formulas. I don't know if there's an work around for that.

Re: Conditional formatting using a formula

Maybe put the formula in a cell then refer to that cell?
